I was intived by Ironman to join a new on-line community. It is called iAmTri.com. It has some very nice features such as finding other athletes that are doing certain events. You can create and personalize your own page. My page is http://iamtri.com/profile/BigMike. Check it out, I think you’ll like it.

Another adventure with coach Diane to talk about. Now mind you that every time I set out to ride with Diane something has happened, rain, sleet snow, hot, cold, flat tires you name it. She also had bad luck on a trip with her husband recently as we all read about. Anyway, my adventure started last week when Diane asked if I would ride with her to Falmouth the day before my triathlon so she could get a long ride in for her IM. I said, sure, no problem that will be fun. (Little did I know) On Saturday at 10:30 in the morning with the temperature a balmy 96+ degrees with a relative humidity of 70+ we began a 117 mile bike ride! Yea haa…. About 1 mile into the trip Diane’s tri bottle falls off her bike and hits the ground. She reattaches it and we continue on. About mile 7 she realizes that her tri bottle is now leaking all over her front brakes making stopping a bit of a challenge. The bottle has sustained an un-repairable hole when it fell on the ground at mile 1. She throws the bottle aside and we continue on. It is now about 100 degrees and I am melting like frosty in the green house. After stopping for more water, which by the way stayed cold for about 5 minutes and was as hot as it was outside. Did I mention that I still have a bit of a cold hanging on and had taken Sudafed prior to leaving the house. I know what your thinking but I was trying to be good to my coach. As the trip progressed I started to drink less because who wants to drink water that is 90 degrees when it is 100 out and feels like 200. You can see where this is going. After several stops along the way we decided it might be good if we eat some real food rather than melted cliff bars and hot Gatorade. We were in a town called Berkley, Mass which probably had a population of 100 and no downtown to speak of. We found a package store and got more, you guessed it, Gatorade and pretzels for lunch, yummy. I poured the entire bottle of water on my head to try and cool off. People that were coming into the store were commenting on how crazy we were to be riding in the heat. One guy asked where we were from and when we told him he said, “That’s near woorchester” to which we replied. “Yes it is”. We made the call to Lori to pick us up in Bourne since we made the decision that we would not go to Falmouth. Diane said, “Come on we ONLY have 35 more miles to go”. A few more miles up the road I stopped again this time at DD and was told that I had to eat a bagel with jelly. The thought of eating anything at this point was making me nauseas. I was able to choke down half of the bagel and some water and off we went. By this time every pedal stroke was work and the salt on my legs had turned to crystals. Did I mention that I hadn’t peed all day? Fast forward to Bourne. We arrived to see Lori waving her arms and looking very well hydrated and cool since she had traveled the smart way in the air conditioned car. I on the other hand I could not walk, eat or drink. Diane made me eat half a banana and the proceeded to pour ice cold water in places I don’t care to mention, which by the way felt good but did help my dehydration. After crawling to the car Lori drove to the Bourne fire department and we went inside to seek help. The firemen were grilling dinner out back having a great time until we showed up. After looking me over and taking some vital signs they said I would need to go to the hospital. As they were taking the stretcher out of the ambulance Diane says, “I’m only going to say this once, he hasn’t peed all day”. After it had been established that I hadn’t peed all day she did mention it again about 30 seconds later and told them that I was a police officer at which time they started to laugh saying, “we love cops, hahaha”. They began searching their medical bag for the biggest needle they could find. So it was off to Falmouth hospital I went with lights flashing and sirens wailing and an IV of saline running in my arm. Lori and Diane came to the emergency room after they stopped for food and something to drink. After Marie arrived they staff began to wonder why all these hotty women were gathered around me. I think Maire told them they were my wife’s. I think they all came just to see Dr. “hotty” Burke the ER doctor and yes girls he was a good looking guy. No, I’m not gay, not that there is anything wrong with that. (Seinfeld). After 3000ml of sodium was pumped into me I felt like a new man. This brought to mind a Jimmy Buffet song. Wasted away in again in Bourne Massachusetts, searching for my lost sugar and salt, some people say that there’s aaaaa wooomen to blame but I know, it’s my own damn fault……will work on the song later. If anyone is EVER thinking of riding with Diane make sure your life insurance is paid up and you bring a rain coat. I love you guys, thanks for being there for me. Congratulations! Lori, Marie, Nancy and Maryellen for doing such an awesome job on the tri. I wish I could have done it with you. Jim

Now Jim, I DID feed you pretzels at the Berkley stop. I did NOT twist your arm to keep going.

Seriously, I feel horrible that I let you continue. I just figured you were as hot as I was, I didn’t realize you had stopped drinking!

I talked to Jason about our ride and he thinks we might have put ourselves in a diluted spot with not enough electrolytes and salt when we kept stopping and buying regular gatorade and water. Next time, we need to add salt to the gatorade. That’s why about 10 miles after we ate the pretzels I started feeling good again. You must not have eaten enough of them.

I strongly suggest you take salt tablets with you on any long rides. You were seriously crystalizing!

Also, I did not know you took sudafed and thought you were better because JIM DIDN’T TELL ME you were still taking it!

OK enough, yelling at Jim, hopefully he learned his lesson. And the lesson is NOT, “don’t ride with Diane again” it is “hydrate and fuel PRIOR to feeling the need to” :-)

Now, we just await the lovely pictures that Lorie too LOL And, BTW, Dr. Burke IS quite the hottie! We also need to finish our song… it definitely sounds better than it looks on paper LOL
We have a few versus…

< >

…some people say that there’s a woman to blame… but I know… it’s my own damn fault.

…wasting away in cape cod looking for my lost sugar and salt….

I almost forgot. I had to wear Marie’s hot pink crocks to the bathroom. That looked so good with my black spandex and IV pole in tow.

5 Diane { 07.21.08 at 8:47 pm }

LOL, I forgot about that!

What a weekend it was….driving Mr. and Ms. Daisy! I’m working on the lyrics, glad to have been reminded about the pink crocks! Jim, we are very jealous, cause we know hotty Dr. Burke was looking at your sweet >>> in the spandex….especially as you strolled across the room wearing the pink crocks!

7 Marie Mcguirk { 07.23.08 at 12:32 pm }

It was quite the wild ride….The pink crocs, they had princess jibbitz too – my 4 year old keeps jamming them on there. MMM – Dr. Burke! It’s not just a ride, it’s an adventure, that’s for sure. And many more to come!

Agreed Marie, Pumpkinman here we come!

So, Jim, on Saturday after we do the sprint tri in Maine for Pumpkinman, we MUST fuel and hydrate (WITH SALT) so we can have a good ride home on Sunday.

Oh yes, I have already placed an order with Hammer for Endurolyte capsules and Powder. I will never EVER go through that again. I did have a lot of fun with you guys and looking forward to Pumpkinman. Lori did you get in? I hope so.
