The Top 10 Nutrition Myths

Here is an article that is a good read on nutrition.  Look at number one.  We discussed this in my tri-spin class last week.  I do limit myself to eating earlier in the evening for a number of reasons.

1.  as the article says, I tend to make bad food choices later at night

2.  I sleep better on a less-full stomach

With 2. as you know from this morning’s story (see what you guys are missing if you’re not doing my tri-spin :-) ) I didn’t sleep well last night  because I was very hungry after I did some weights and core after dinner last night.  Which brings up the other point in this article about “if you workout at night eating later is not an option”.

In any event, enjoy the article and let’s chat about it.

The Eating thing is still a work in process for me, I confided to JB that I have a Very Large Cup of Coffee in the AM, before working out. As for some reason Dairy does not agree with me when I am doing this training (nothing new) I do use soymilk (lite, unsweetend), feeling virtuous. When I was looking at a race in CT, there was an ad for a book called the fat triathlete, I don’t want to be a fat triathlete – Any books about food as fuel would be greatly helpful. I think I obsess more about the nutrition than I do about swimming and running.

Marie, don’t get that book, it isn’t appropriate for you. I’ve read it just for info on what they are telling overweight athletes.

I have found a great book that I think you would enjoy. It’s called
Endurance Sports Nutrition, 2nd Edition by Suzanne Girard Eberle. I think it has great advice, and it’s easy to understand and follow. The nutrition piece is as important as the other pieces of triathlon and I’m glad you are taking it seriously.

As far as the coffee goes, it is fine for you to have coffee before you work out. I would suggest you eat some food with it though so you don’t get stomach upset or possible intestinal issues.

Diane, hope the back was better today, we sure did have a Long swim, but I’m doing it, who knew. Today, I am obsessing about running, when are we going to run outside, and I think I would like to, at some point use one of my hours of coach time on the running thing. I’m glad I don’t have to give up the coffee – Caffeine withdrawal is the WORST!!! (I have cut down, I switched my 4pm java for nuts and and apple or another fruit.

So, first things first…excellent job on your swimming. You look so much more comfortable. Secondly, you are doing great with your nutrition. Giving up that 4pm coffee is really important because you will find you will sleep better without it, not to mention replacing it with fruit is fantastic.

On the running, if you want to use one of your coaching sessions for it, you can pick either Matt or I to do it with you then we can pick a date/time. You are ready to run outside. Let’s do it!
